idle women on the water
idle women (on the water) was our inaugural touring project.
A bespoke narrow boat conceived, designed and built by women serving as an arts centre navigated the canals and waterways of the North West. Constantly cruising the project visited women in countryside and towns. Hosting a series of artists-in-residence, workshops, outreach programmes in collaboration with specialist support services for women & events it provided both visiting arts venue and arts resource centre for women.
Delivered over the course of two years (2015-2017) in partnership with Super Slow Ways, Heart of Glass, Creative Scene, and The Canal and River Trust and supported by Arts Council England Strategic Touring.
idle women (on water) is an adventurous, collaborative, socially engaged vehicle, which supports and initiates the generation of new work with an expansive diverse network of women.
Honouring the working tradition of the canals by using a pair of existing historical working narrow boats - a ‘tug’ motor boat towing a ‘butty’ unmotorised boat which will house the cargo - in this instance an artist in residence and work space.
